Fourteen Senators, Two Votes, One Calendar

Fourteen people took the oath and voted on medical cannabis in 2021 and again in 2025. An oath carries a record, and a record is only useful if you can see it next to the date you get to answer it. This is that page. Would you believe me if I told you the vote is public, and almost nobody has seen it next to the date they get to answer it?

Record, not verdict

The idea, plainly

If you pay an OPPD bill, you probably never think about who decides what is on it. Most of us also have a state senator without knowing how they voted on the bill we cared about. Both are public. This post puts the vote, the term date and the November ballot side by side for fourteen senators, so the answer is one glance and not one afternoon.

It does not tell you who to vote for, and it does not say why anybody voted the way they did.

The two votes

May 12, 2021

LB474, the Medicinal Cannabis Act: motion to invoke cloture (end debate so the bill can move on). 31 yes, 18 no. 33 were needed, so it was not adopted.

Nov 5, 2024

Nebraska voters approve Initiatives 437 and 438 on the ballot. 437 passed with 71.05% and 438 with 67.29%, by our arithmetic from the printed totals in the Board of State Canvassers’ official report.

May 20, 2025

LB677, to regulate what the voters passed: motion MO278 to invoke cloture. 23 yes, 22 no, 3 present not voting, 1 excused. 33 were needed, so it failed.

Fourteen of the senators on the 2021 roll call are still in office and were also on the 2025 roll call. The full 49-name roll calls are on the full page.

Read this carefully. A yes on cloture is a vote to end debate and move the bill. It is not, by itself, a statement about medical cannabis. Several senators said on the floor in 2021 that they could vote against cloture and still support a bill. The only way to know is to ask them, and this project has not yet done that.

Sen. Arch voted no in 2021 and was recorded “present not voting” in 2025. Those are different acts, so his row is shown but not counted as a change. Of the other thirteen, none changed.

What the calendar shows

What that means for you

If your district is one of the ten, the seat is filled in January 2027 by one of the people listed in the table (a write-in is always possible; I have not checked for one). Their record on this topic, if any, is their own. I have started asking candidates the same questions on the same day, but not every district yet, and I will publish the answers side by side as they come in.

What I have not done

Not confirmed

Term end dates are carried over from our two-votes page and match Nebraska’s staggered four-year schedule. On October 9, 2026 I checked all fourteen against the election years in our roll-call data, which came from each senator’s Legislature biography page (read September 23); every date agrees. I have not re-read the biography pages themselves since September 23. I have not asked any of the fourteen why they voted as they did. The votes on who sits on the Medical Cannabis Commission (the confirmation votes) are not on this page yet; I am waiting on those roll calls from the Legislature. This page says nothing about them.

That is what unfinished homework looks like. Beta means incomplete. It never means fake.
